While we’ve all had a time or two when a meat fiber or seed hull has gotten uncomfortably stuck between two teeth. However, if you have a bad habit of nibbling on foreign objects, or biting your fingernails, it can cause a piece to break off and become uncomfortably lodged between your teeth, or gum line.
Even if you are in distress, you need to keep a cool head, and work methodically to find the safest method to remove the offending object.
The first thing to try is a vigorous rinse with a little lukewarm saltwater. This might help to dislodge the object on its own. This could also help wash away any debris, detritus, or lingering blood to give you a better look at the problem. If you have a water flosser device on hand, it might also help clear it away.
You should never use toothpicks or sharp, pointed tools to pry the object loose. This could injure your gums or even chip one of the nearby teeth.
Waxed dental floss is the ideal tool for clearing the object from between your teeth. The waxy coating allows the strand to slide easier between teeth to worked around the foreign object. You should never force the floss into place, as it could seriously injure your gums. A floss threader loaded with waxed floss might also help you work at it from a different position.
