Dental sealants are very thin layers of plastic that are effective at protecting your molars and premolars from tooth decay. Our dentists, Dr. Dwight Price and Dr. Joseph Bauscher can apply the sealants to your teeth in one painless visit. Sealants can protect the ridges and grooves in your back teeth, also known as cusps. Even if you do a good job of brushing your teeth, your toothbrush may not be able to reach between the cusps to remove the bacteria, food debris and acids that cause cavities.

Keep in mind that the sealants only protect the chewing surfaces of your molars and premolars, so you will still need to brush, floss, and see your dentist for your regular appointments.

When is the right time to get dental sealants? Normally, sealants are applied to the back teeth of children, since they are more prone to cavities than adults. Also, sealants are most effective the earlier they are applied, and so the dentist usually applies them after the back teeth erupt. However, adults who may struggle with tooth decay, or whose teeth are cavity-free are also good candidates.
